In picking KS, he highlights everything that makes him great (progressive with bi-partisan appeal, relates to heartland values, outsider, reformer) without running the risk of picking someone who makes him look like a novice on foreign policy (say joe biden or sam nunn). I think by picking someone who has a long foreign policy record he gives the impression that he doesn't feel comfortable making those types of decisions on his own and thereby concedes the issue to McCain.
